1- The nature of carbon dioxide

The Carbon Dioxide Gas (CO2) molecule consists of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. This gas is colorless and odorless in normal concentrations. However, in very high concentrations, this gas has an acidic and sharp smell and a sour taste.

Carbon dioxide gas is used in commercial and industrial consumption due to its non-flammability and relatively low price. The Carbon Dioxide Gas (CO2) can exist in three forms:

1. In the form of gas: for the beverage and food industries
2. In liquid form: in a pressurized storage tank
3. In solid form: called dry ice (for cooling, blasting, etc.)

2- The application of co2

• Liquid carbon dioxide turns into a solid at a very low temperature and is used as dry ice in various cases.
• It is used to extinguish fire and in fire extinguishers
• Production of chemicals
• Synthesis of fuel and chemicals
• As a shielding gas in welding to prevent oxidation and increase the welding speed in combination with argon
• Slaughter of animals with CO2 gas
• In metalworking, casting, in addition to its anti-corrosive properties, it is used to harden casting molds.

• In refrigerators for transporting food and cooling effect
• Adding high-purity carbon dioxide to alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, and carbonated beverages to aerate and prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi.

• In oil industries, to optimize, increase oil recovery and recovery, by injecting CO2 under high pressure into oil reservoirs and reducing viscosity, oil extraction becomes easier as a result. It seems that injecting CO2 is more economical than injecting sour gas.

3- Exploitation of CO2

As you have noticed, CO2 is naturally present in the air. But separating it from air is a difficult task and high concentrations of it are required for commercial use. About 230 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) are used annually in the world. The highest consumption is for fertilizer production, where 130 million tons of CO2 are used in the production of urea, followed by oil and gas with the consumption of 70 to 80 million tons of CO2. Other commercial applications include food and beverage production, metal fabrication, cooling, fire suppression, and plant growth stimulation in greenhouses. North America with (33%), China with (21%) and Europe with (16%) are the biggest consumers. Demand for its use is still expected to grow.
